Pakistan is a developing country. Tourist facilities are available in major cities but limited in outlying areas. The infrastructure of the areas of Kashmir and the Northwest Frontier Province was devastated as a result of the October 8, 2005 earthquake and is not yet fully recovered. In October 2002, Pakistan held the first national and provincial assembly elections since the October 1999 coup. A new Parliament and Prime Minister took office, although Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf and the military continue to play a significant role in the government.
